Located on the Uruguay River in the municipality of Aratiba (RS), Itá HPP began operations in 2000. It has 1,450 MW of installed capacity, in five generator units with vertical turbines of the Francis type, each with a 290 MW output.
In accordance with the project, the installation of the hydroelectric power plant’s run-of-river reservoir of 141 km2 involved the construction of a new city, the new Itá in the state of Santa Catarina, currently the region’s tourist hub, and conserving the traditions and architecture of the submerged old city.
The plant’s concession agreement expires in 2030 and pertains to the Itá Consortium in which ENGIE holds a majority stake of 77.7% of the installed capacity with 564.7 average MW of physical guarantee for commercialization.
The Itá HPP is certified according to ISO 9001 and 14001 quality management and environmental standards and the OHSAS 18001 occupational health and safety standard.
