The Research & Development (R&D) Program constitutes a fundamental element in the strategy for promoting innovation. Aligned to the culture of open innovation, this Program works on the basis of partnerships with companies, universities and research institutions, according the principles enshrined in Law 9.991/2000, which requires an investment of 1% of annual net operating revenue in R&D. During the course of 2019, R$ 48.5 million was allocated to the Program as detailed below:
- R$ 19.4 million to the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FNDCT);
- R$ 9.7 million to the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) for costs of the Energy Research Company (EPE);
- R$ 19.4 million for investments in R&D projects either new or in progress.
11 projects in progress received funding of R$ 14.1 million during the year, distributed across six different areas of research.
The Company and its subsidiaries closed the year 2019 with a total of R$ 57.6 million in cash for R&D.
